From regenerating limbs and tails … to Wolverine-like amphibians … Here’s everything you need to Know About Japanese Giant Salamanders & Salamanders Subscribe to Epic Wildlife 🤍 Let's Connect 🤍 🤍 🤍 🤍 #6 Rough-Skinned Newt We mentioned how the skin of some salamanders could have toxic properties. This critter provides a good example of that. It has rough, granular skin that contains glands which produce an especially potent neurotoxin called ‘tetrodotoxin’, or TTX. It’s the same toxin carried by pufferfish and causes death by asphyxiation. Even touching the newt’s toxin is enough to cause skin irritations. And it has been documented that eating one of these beasts can kill you. #5 Olm Also known as Proteus, these amphibians are recognized as Europe’s only cave-dwelling vertebrates. They’re entirely aquatic and even sleep underwater. The ancient salamanders are blind but possess well-developed sensory organs that enable them to hunt prey like small crabs, snails, and insects. They’ve evolved over millions of years to exist in a subterranean environment, and are known to live for 100 years. Despite those long life spans, the Olm only reproduce about once a decade. Did you know that in the 17th century heavy rains in Slovenia (slo-VEE-nee-uh) washed them up from their subterranean habitat? People believed the animals were baby dragons that lived deep in the Earth. #4 Iberian Ribbed Newt This amphibian found in Morocco has a defense mechanism that involves a bit of self-mutilation. And it’s also reminiscent of the Wolverine character from the X-men comic books and movies. When threatened, it will push its ribs through the sides of its body. As the bones pierce the skin, the animal produces a toxin that secretes through the newly opened pores. This serves to inject stinging toxins into the mouth of a predator. Thanks to the newt’s superior immune system, the pierced skin quickly heals with no infection or scar tissue developing. For the record, the animal’s bones are not made from adamantium. #3 Giant Pepper Fish That’s what the Giant Japanese Salamander is often called in its native land. Specimens in the wild have weighed around 58 pounds (26.5 kg) while measuring some five feet long (160 cm). That’s enough to make them both the world’s second largest species of salamander and the second-largest amphibians. Experts say the animals are often found in the southwest part of the country where it’s restricted to streams and is entirely aquatic. Their skin contains a lot of folds to increase its area because that’s how they respire. The ‘pepper fish’ tag is applied for a couple of reasons. They spend all their time in the water, and they secrete a milky substance with a pungent odor that smells like Japanese pepper. Did you know it’s believed that a mythical beast called the Kappa might have been inspired by the giant salamander? #2 Axolotl These animals are named for an Aztec deity, and they’re native to lakes and canals of Mexico. They’re also called Mexican walking fish and are known for having a blissed-out appearance. Along with some other factors, that unique looks helps make it a popular choice in the pet trade. They’re also popular with scientists and researchers thanks to their amazing regenerative abilities. Axolotls can regrow their legs, tails, and even their spinal cords. There’s a theory that the amphibians inherited the ability from a common ancestor shared with zebrafish that lived over 400 million years ago. Unfortunately, they’re critically endangered due to pollution and habitat loss. At one point in 2014 axolotls were thought to have gone extinct in the wild until a few specimens finally appeared. 1..

Almost everyone knows of him, but very rarely does anyone actually get to see this nocturnal wanderer. This is because he leads a secret, silent and absolutely inconspicuous life, that of a loner, only on the move after dusk. In addition to this, he has survived the dinosaurs as a kind of relic from the dawn of time: The fire, or spotted salamander, a colourful inhabitant of German beech forests. Yet still not everything is known regarding this extraordinary animal and his fascinating way of life. Impressive footage provides an exciting insight into the hidden life of the spotted salamander, the most prominent representative of amphibians living in Germany. For the very first time, this film documents in detail, the adventurous living conditions of salamander larvae, whose first weeks are more of a race against time, of life or death. No one has ever captured the lives of these rare forest-dwellers in such detail and as compelling as this on film before.

Native to the lakes of Mexico City, the axolotl stays in the water its whole life, swimming with a tail fin and breathing through frilly external gills. It’s nearly extinct in the wild, but survives in research labs the world over, studied for its amazing regenerative abilities. With our help, can these beloved creatures thrive once again in their ancestral home? SUBSCRIBE to Deep Look! 🤍 Go watch Animal IQ, on PBS Terra! : 🤍 - The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is an aquatic salamander that basically never wants to grow up. It grows in size as it matures, but unlike most of its close cousins in the mole salamander family, it does not change into a land-dwelling adult. For its entire life, it lives in the water, retaining its larval characteristics – like external gills and a tailfin, used for swimming. Now, the few remaining wild axolotls left in the world live in the middle of Mexico City, in the canals that are the remnants of their native Lake Xochimilco. Here, for over 800 years, the animal has represented a bridge between humans and the natural world. The name “axolotl” comes from the Nahuatl Aztec language meaning “water dog.” For the Aztecs, this swimming salamander is one of the spirit animal forms of the Aztec god Xolotl, who is associated with lighting and death, and imbued with powers of physical transformation. Mexico City was built around, and on top of, a large network of spring-fed lakes over the hundreds of years of its existence. The lakes were drained and filled in over time, as the millions of people made the city their home. - How do axolotls breathe? The signature frills behind the axolotl’s head are its external gills. The fine, branched structure of these exposed gills allows more surface area to be exposed to absorb oxygen from the water. To breathe, an axolotl just needs to flap those external gills! That’s not all - these animals have even more ways they can breathe. Like all other salamanders, axolotls are able to absorb oxygen through their skin. Plus, they have fully functional lungs they can use if there is not enough oxygen in the water. NOTE to axolotl pet owners: Despite having working lungs, the animals will not survive for more than a few hours out of water. - Is the axolotl immortal? No, axolotls are not immortal, but they do possess extraordinary powers of limb and organ regeneration. If these aquatic amphibians lose a leg, tail or even parts of their spinal cord or brain, they can regrow the missing piece. There are other animals that can regenerate organs and limbs, but the axolotl is one of very few vertebrates (animals with backbones - like us) that is able to do this. -+ Find additional resources and a transcript on KQED Science: 🤍 -+ Shoutout! 🏆Congratulations🏆 to the following fans on our Deep Look Community Tab for correctly answering our GIF challenge, that nerve cells are needed to begin any regenerative process for axolotls.
