Russians flock to Georgia, again, as Putin escalates war

The tree-lined Rustaveli Avenue of Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi, is filled with young men lugging backpacks and suitcases, trying to orient themselves around this new city. Occasionally accompanied by wives or girlfriends, they have fled their homes in Russia to escape the partial mobilisation ordered by President Vladimir Putin for more manpower on the battlefields of Ukraine. Those who have previously served in the military, even as conscripts, and are now registered in the reserves, are the likeliest to receive a summons, but even older men with no experience have been called up. Georgian officials say more than 10,000 Russians are crossing the border each day and images widely shared on social media show lines of cars snaking towards Georgia and Mongolia. Al Jazeera’s Imran Khan reports from Larsi border crossing in Georgia. Could the Ukraine war go nuclear? | The Bottom Line

After seven months of all-out war in Ukraine, there seems to be no quick end to the conflict. Russia controls about 20 percent of the country, despite recent advances by the Ukrainian military, which is supported by Western intelligence gathering and weapons. The United States is doubling down on the war effort, and so is Russia. Military reservists are being called up for duty, and President Vladimir Putin recently said he was “not bluffing” when he threatened to “make use of all weapon systems available” to defend his country. Host Steve Clemons asks nuclear policy experts Kori Schake and Jon Wolfstahl about nuclear options and deterrence. 🇺🇦 How will Russian annexation change the war in Ukraine? | The Stream

29.09.2022

In the war in Ukraine, recent territorial gains by Ukrainian forces have now been overshadowed by the anticipated Russian annexation of large parts of the country’s east that could lead to many more months of intensified fighting. Earlier this month, a successful Ukrainian counteroffensive in the northeastern region of Kharkiv resulted in the retreat of Russian troops and subsequent discovery of suspected Russian war crimes. Soon after, President Vladimir Putin called for roughly 300,000 reservists to join the war in a "partial mobilisation" mandate that triggered violence and unrest in some Russian towns. This week, Moscow’s "staged referendums" have paved the way for the annexation of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia. Declaring full Russian control in these areas - which make up about 15% of Ukraine - could set the stage for another escalation in the more than seven-month-old war. For Ukrainian men who remain in the area, many fear they will be conscripted into fighting a war against their own people. In this episode of The Stream, we'll look at how Ukrainians are dealing with the latest shifts in the war. If Russia moves ahead with its plans to annex four Ukrainian regions, it would mark a "dangerous escalation" that would jeopardize the prospects for peace in the region, the United Nations Secretary-General warned on Thursday. "Any decision to proceed with the annexation of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions of Ukraine would have no legal value and deserves to be condemned," Antonio Guterres told reporters. The Labour Files - The Hierarchy I Al Jazeera Investigations

27.09.2022

Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit reveals how a British political party that claims to embrace progressive values created a hierarchy of racism that discriminated against its Black, Asian and Muslim members. Interviews, internal documents and social media messages shared by the most senior staff in Britain’s Labour Party betray a racist culture where abuse was aimed at their own colleagues, councillors and political leaders. The Labour Files exposes how a battle for the heart of the UK’s main opposition party led to combatting anti-Semitism while creating secret dossiers to suspend Muslim members and shut down local democracy. Labour’s campaign to present a tough image on anti-Semitism while ignoring other forms of discrimination drove many staff to resign. One senior Labour staffer of Asian descent compared working in the Labour offices to be attacked by a racist thug. CORRECTION: An earlier version of this film reported that some WhatsApp messages about MP Diane Abbott suffering illness came after she announced that she had diabetes. In fact, some of the messages were written before her condition became publicly known. Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit uncovers the true story behind the “crisis of anti-Semitism” that engulfed the British Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn. It made him appear unfit to govern and led to a crushing electoral defeat. An analysis of internal party documents, social media data and covert recordings reveals how senior Labour officials used the party’s procedures to undermine support for Jeremy Corbyn and to silence debate about Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. The files also show how pro-Israel groups ask the party to distance itself from the Boycott Divest and Sanctions campaign, a protest movement that seeks to end Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands, and how - in response - the Jewish Board of Deputies was assured that Labour would “never accept attempts to exceptionalise and deligitimise Israel.” Subscribe to our channel 🤍 Follow us on Twitter 🤍 Find us on Facebook 🤍 Check our website: 🤍 🤍AljazeeraEnglish #aljazeeraenglish #aljazeerainvestigations #News

“There are four new regions of Russia,” President Vladimir Putin says in a lengthy speech declaring the annexation of Ukrainian lands at a Kremlin ceremony. Putin says the residents in the four annexed regions will now be Russia’s “citizens forever”. The Russian president also argued it was the “integral right” of people in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia to join Russia, citing the United Nations charter and its affirmation of the right to self-determination. Watch Part 1 here: 🤍 With guns in their hands and faith in God at their side, many Republicans in the United States continue to believe that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump. As a result, the country remains deeply divided over the last contest for the White House - and the violent attempts at the Capitol that followed to overturn the result. Now, as the November 2022 mid-term elections draw near, this poisonous ideological clash reflects such starkly contrasting interpretations of "freedom" and "authoritarianism", that some fear the very basis of America's democratic consensus is in peril. Ukraine’s president says his country is submitting an “accelerated” application to join the NATO transatlantic military alliance. Kyiv’s move follows Moscow’s formal annexation of four partly occupied regions. “We are taking our decisive step by signing Ukraine’s application for accelerated accession to NATO,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a Telegram post issued in the wake of Russia’s annexation announcement. Ascension to NATO requires the unanimous approval of all 30 of the alliance’s member states.
